Integrin alpha-5 (UniProt P11688; CD49 antigen-like family member E, CD49e, Fibronectin receptor subunit alpha, Integrin alpha-F, VLA-5) and Integrin beta-1 (UniProt P09055; CD29, Fibronectin receptor subunit beta, GpIIa, VLA-4 subunit beta) are encoded by the Itga5 (VLA5, Fnra; Gene ID 16402) and the Itgb1 (Fnrb; Gene ID 16412) gene, respectively, in murine species. The integrin family of cell adhesion receptors consists of at least 16 membrane-associated heterodimers, composed of an alpha and beta subunit that associate in a non-covalent manner. The structure and functional diversity of the integrin family are based upon the pairing abilities of the individual alpha and beta subunits. Key to these molecular interactions between the integrin receptors and their respective ligands is the recognition of the Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence, known to be present in the extracellular matrix components fibronectin, vitronectin, collagen, fibrinogen, and von Willebrand factor. The involvement of integrins in vascular proliferation, adhesion, and wound repair has been well documented. The adhesion receptor alphaVbeta1 is also known as VLA-5 (very late antigen-5) and the primary receptor for fibronectin. VLA-5 is reported to be involved many important physiological events, including angiogenesis, inflammation, neural crest development and cardiovascular morphogenesis.

This Anti-Integrin 51 Antibody, clone BMA5 is validated for use in Flow Cytometry, Immunoprecipitation, Affects Function for the detection of Integrin 51.
Immunoprecipitation Analysis: A representative lot immunoprecipitated integrin VLA-5 (V1) complex from murine cells, including SSC-VII oral cavity cancer cells, B16F1 melanoma cells, and mast cells (CFTL-15 & MC/9, BMMCs) (Fehlner-Gardiner, C.C., et al. (1996). Differentiation. 60(5):317-325).
Affects Function: A representative lot suppressed 2GPI surface expression on RAW264.7 cells and attenuated cardiolipin-2GPI (aCL/2GPI) complex- and gelsolin-mediated cellular p38 and FAK phosphorylation (Bohgaki, M., et al. (2011). J. Cell. Mol. Med. 15(1):141-151).
Affects Function: A representative lot, when combined with anti-Integrin 3 antibody, greatly blocked EphA8-stimulated NIH/3T3 adhesion to fibronectin surface (Gu, C., and Park, S. (2001). Mol Cell Biol. 21(14):4579-4597).
Affects Function: A representative lot, when combined with anti-Integrin 4, clone PS/2 (Cat. No. CBL1304), greatly blocked PMA-stimulated adhesion of spleen T-cells from non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice to fibronectin-coated surface (Uniyal, S., et al. (1999). J. Autoimmun. 12(3):167-176).
Affects Function: A representative lot, when administered together with anti-Integrin 4, clone PS/2 (Cat. No. CBL1304) via intraperitoneal injection, greatly reduced pancreas islet leukocyte infiltration among non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice following diabetes onset induction by cyclophosphamide injection (Uniyal, S., et al.
