Thionyl bromide is used as a brominating agent in organic synthesis. It is used in the bromination of alfa-beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. It is also used to prepare alkyl bromides from alcohols.

Moisture and light sensitive. Store in a cool place. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with water, hydrobromide, acetone and alcohol.It hydrolyzes readily to release hydrogen bromide.
