It is also used in making pigments for glasses and ceramics, and drier for paints. Further it is used in the manufacture of manganese steel and several manganese derivatives including potassium permanganate, a powerful versatile oxidant. Catalytic hydration of nitriles to amides by flowing through manganese dioxide has been reported. Manganese dioxide supported on inorganic oxide can be used for oxidation of methylamine through CWAO (Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation). It has high potential as highly efficient and robust material for water oxidation reaction (WORs).

At temperatures above 550?°C, manganese(IV) oxide forms manganese(III) oxide and oxygen. It can slightly stain the skin, which can be washed off with some rubbing.

Manganese(IV) oxide is used as a pigment and as a reagent inorganic synthesis especially for the oxidation of allylic alcohols. It is also used for dry -cell batteries such as the alkaline battery and the zinc-carbon battery. It is involved in the preparation of other manganese compounds. It is a precursor to ferromanganese and related alloys, which is useful in the steel industry. It catalyses the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Further, it is used to prepare manganese(II) sulfate, manganese(II) chloride and potassium permanganate. In addition to this, it is used in ceramics and glass manufacturing as an inorganic pigment.

Manganese(IV) oxide is suitable for use in batteries. It is widely used for the selective oxidation of allylic and benzylic alcohols to aldehydes or ketones, as a co-oxidant in combination with 1,4-benzoquinone and in the allylic oxidation of olefins catalyzed by Palladium(II)?- acetate. It acts a reagent for oxidations. It is the source of manganese and all its compounds, largely used in manufacturing of manganese steel, for making amethyst glass, decolorizing glass, painting on porcelain, faience and majolica. The precipitate is used in electrotechnics, pigments, browning gun barrels, drier for paints and varnishes, printing and dyeing textiles.

应用

Manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) can be used as an oxidizing agent for the oxidation of:

  • Allylic alcohols to α, β-ethylenic aldehydes, or ketones.
  • Propargylic alcohols to alkynic aldehydes or ketones.
  • Benzylic and heterocyclic alcohols to conjugated aromatic aldehydes or ketones.
  • Amines to aldehydes, imines, amides, and diazo compounds. Methyl arenes to form primary amides in the presence of urea and oxygen.
  • MnO2 can also be used to synthesize disubstituted oxazolines from aldoximes via in situ nitrile oxide formation. Non-activated cyclic and acyclic alcohols oxidized to ketone analogs using stoichiometric MnO2 and a ruthenium catalyst.
